You would think, what with the world being in the grips of a global pandemic, that excitable holidaymakers enjoying foreign climbs would be respectful of someone else’s country during such tense times. But apparently not, as four British tourists have proved in Amsterdam recently.
The quartet decided it’d be a laugh to drive a car straight into a canal in the Dutch city’s Red Light District, where they then had to be helped to safety by locals. Not exactly socially distancing, is it?
Local residents have revealed they witnessed the four men smoking cannabis and inhaling nitrous oxide before they crashed their motor into the Oudezijds Voorburgwal canal at around 9.30pm.
Firefighters lifted the car from the canal following the men’s safe removal.
One witness told local TV station AT5, “I saw the police removing the empty laughing gas containers from the wreckage. They’d been in the car for several hours before. One of them nearly drowned because he was so high.”
Another witness told newspaper NU that one of the men didn’t appear to know how to swim and ‘was completely stressed’, resulting in him dragging the person who ended up rescuing him under water briefly, as well.
There have been no updates from police as to whether they are investigating the case any further.
